On the last Wednesday of may 15, the Embassy of Ecuador to the Holy see enthroned in the Vatican Gardens a mosaic of Our Lady of the Presentation of Quinche, the patroness of the country.
The enthronement ceremony was attended by the governor of the state of the Vatican City, Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello; the Ambassador of Ecuador attached to the Holy See, José Luis Álvarez Palacio; and the Rector of the Pontifical Latin American College of Rome, as well as the representative of the Episcopal Conference of Ecuador, father Gilberto Freire.
In his speech, Cardinal Bertello stressed that the place where the mosaic is located is that of the most venerated Marian invocations in Latin America, and that this new devotion enriches and embellishes that Latin American Corner.
With this gesture, Ecuador wishes to come even closer to the Holy Father, who in 2015 visited the sanctuary of Our Lady of Quinche’s presentation on the occasion of his first pastoral visit to Ecuador,” said the Ambassador of the Latin American country.
José Luis Álvarez Palacio also explained that a year ago the project of producing a mosaic representative of the patron saint of Ecuador was started “to dedicate it to this wonderful Vatican Hill and its gardens, adorned with some important Marian invocations of Latin America and the world.
The work by Ecuadorian artist Doménica Barahona was produced using the technique of embedded mosaic, which gathers small square pieces of material, such as marble, stone, enamelled ceramics and painted glass.
The background of the mosaic Nuestra Señora de la Presentación de Quinche is made up of different plants and wildflowers from all regions of Ecuador. In addition, nine bronze sculptures in The Shape of picaflores are represented. Our Lady’s dress is decorated with pre-Columbian symbols reminiscent of Ecuador’s past.
Our Lady of the Quinche presentation: may Ecuadorians be faithful in faith and committed to spreading and defending it if possible by giving their lives. Protect the Church, Pope Francis, our country and the whole world , may your Son, The Sacred Heart To whom we are consecrated, grant us peace and well-being.
